Center stage with Mark MacGann, Uber Files whistleblower

We were breaking democracy itself.

Mark MacGann, former head of public policy at Uber for Europe, Middle East and Africa, took center stage at the Web Summit yesterday in Lisbon to discuss the peril around regulating Big Tech. In his on-stage interview with Paul Lewis of The Guardian, he warned, “Some of these tech firms have become too big to govern, too big to regulate, and are richer and more powerful than some of the states that are trying to regulate them.”

Coverage included The Guardian, Reuters and Fortune.

Mark’s appearance at Web Summit followed his testimony last week to the European Parliament, focusing on expanding rights and protections for platform workers in Europe. During his opening statement and during questioning, he laid out the case for legislation that will level the playing field between tech companies and platform workers. His full statement can be read here, and more on the hearing and coverage is here.

One year later: The Facebook Files

What impact has there been since Frances Haugen came forward with revelations about Facebook’s internal workings? The first stories, named the Facebook Files, were published in September 2021. They followed a number of hearings, notably in the US and in the UK, to help legislators explore how to better regulate social media platforms.

In our latest blog, TSN Executive Director, Delphine Halgand-Mishra, and TSN Advisor and Theranos whistleblower, Tyler Schultz, reflect on the impact of the Facebook Files, looking at three areas of influence: legislative, justice and advocacy.

Impact: Tricastin nuclear power plant searched by authorities

The impact of the “Hugo” whistleblower case in France continues to grow. Since Hugo, a former member of the management at Tricastin nuclear power plant, blew the whistle on safety concerns at the plant, authorities have been following up on his revelations. In June, a judicial investigation was opened about the case. Now Mediapart reports that the plant was raided by police as part of the ongoing investigation.

Hugo continues to cooperate with authorities. TSN continues to provide him with legal and advocacy support.

You can read the Mediapart article in French here.
