Welcome to Module 5 of the Sensitive Source Safety Training.
Abstract:
Deciding when and how to publish sensitive information is one of the most critical—and risky—moments in working with whistleblowers and confidential sources. This module equips you with strategies to balance public interest with source protection, ensuring disclosures are handled responsibly before, during, and after publication.
About this course:
Publishing can trigger official denials, legal threats, or attempts to identify and retaliate against sources. How do you structure a release strategy that minimises risk? What protocols safeguard your source once the story is live? And how do you prepare for the consequences—both anticipated and unexpected—for all stakeholders involved?
This module explores best practices for redaction, contingency planning, and post-publication communication, with guidance on when to seek outside expertise.
