One Year On: Joshua Farinella’s Courageous Stand
One year ago, Joshua Farinella made the brave decision to speak out.
On March 20, 2024, The Outlaw Ocean Project published an investigative report about food safety, human rights and labor abuses at Choice Canning Company’s shrimp processing factory in Amalapuram, India. The report was based on the well-documented disclosures of U.S. whistleblower, Joshua Farinella, who worked there as the factory’s general manager.
Joshua’s courage not only exposed serious abuses in India’s shrimp industry, but also sparked real actions.
A Year of Impact
In the twelve months since Joshua came forward, his disclosures have made a big difference. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has begun refusing shrimp imports from Choice Canning Company, after tests showed recent shipments were laced with veterinary drugs.
TSN welcomed the prompt support expressed by Congressman Jared Huffman and U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, as well as the request from the House Committee on Natural Resources to access Joshua’s evidence of potential U.S. law violations. While there is still a long way to go, Joshua’s bravery has pushed for more safety in the shrimp industry.
